Video: Caffeine, bikes and the Alps.

Came for the cafe in the title and found out that the makers are actually from Bavaria- so check out their other videos too, I guess..

From "Brettlfahrn" to "riversurfing" - Design lessons incl.

Waiting
"As I rode home through the city, with my board hanging off my bike I could feel the same warmth of adrenalin as it rushed around my body. I smiled at having found a new reason to wake up in the mornings with a sense of apprehension.
It struck me that as designers the concepts we create will inevitably reach many more users, in many more settings than we can deliberately design for—and that rather than denying or ignoring these adaptations we can learn from, understand, and be inspired by our concepts in their different contexts."

via @GOOD
Eleanor Davies researcher @frogdesign on her first ride on our beloved little "Eisbach".
Her text ( full version over at her blog) includes almost everything I love about Munich.

The idea of observing 'designs' in unforseen & unplaned contexts and learning from it is so obvious - and  yet  seldom seen as welcome.
While there is so much emphasis placed on new and "revolutionary" ideas, many of us seem to forget the value of learning "through the process".
Maybe some of the many self-appointed "designers of the 21st century" & "gods of sustainability" ashould rather grab a surfboard than go to conference number 5234 and talk talk talk.

Talking about surfing:  "Keep Surfing" the brandnew film about how people started hitting the waves here in Munich is hitting cinemas these days.
Björn Richie Lob, tells the story of how  the ingeneous idea of "riding a river" came to being- The culture, the stories and the people behind it.

BOB and why I love Munich.

(download)

...because going to spots like this awesome Lake-"Tegernsee" only takes around 30 min!
Get 5 friends, 5€ each and hop on one of the comfortable quiet BOB-trains. Whether it's hiking the Alps or just taking a boat ride on a quiet mountain lake.
The ability to quickly and easily switch between relaxing mode and the cozyness of the countryside while still beeing able to enjoy the nightlife and culture of true city. A whole new world within train distance.

However during the stress of day-to-day-life many people, including me, forget about that: We line up at overcrowded Starbucks, or spend thousands of €€€ on holidays to exotic countries where we think we can finally find our badly needed 'time out.' In most cases though just jumping on that thirty-minute train would do the same (if not even a better) job!

Exploiting this chance more frequently is part of my little plans for 2010. I'm sure Munich is not the only city with those hidden treasures in front of you doorstep ;-)
