Unemployment and the need for a plan to cope with the 21st century.

Here’s the reality: Over the next decade or two, we’re going to look at unemployment rates of about a third of the population of the advanced countries as productivity increases with automation and jobs with lower education requirements get more and more scarce as the remaining functions that require human intervention get more and more sophisticated.

What we need is not a plan to put more people to work, because the result will almost inevitably be busywork which serves no purpose other than give people something to do. What we need is a plan to cope with an economic system in which we don’t need everybody to participate but enable everyone to participate. What we need is a plan for us as society to finance us as a society and set free the creative energies we have as such.

What we need is a plan to cope with the 21st century.

Well said. This is so screamingly obvious and yet there is almost no public discussion about what to do.

The Burger Of The Future?

Unsure what to think about cooking on that scale.
Yes, shit like this may be super-delicous and take creativity in cooking to a whole new level, but at the same time it takes us further away from the essence of cooking with real, fresh ingredients and the cook as the main processor in the chain. What do you think will we eat in 20 years?

Watch Peter Hogenkamp from the NZZ (@phogenkamp) talking about a digital natives attempt to give "Online" the right kick in the ass @zurich_CM.

Great to see two bright minds, namely Peter and Floria Steglich joining forces to get things going with such an elegant old print lady like the NZZ. Can't wait to see the first results from the NZZ labs.

-Now, can I please have such a team for a German paper as well?

NEWS+ from Bonnier: "Walking the walk instead of talking the talk"

"Walking the walk instead of talking the talk."

Something as promising as the concept you just saw happens when smart tech-people like the folks from BERG and people that truly understand print like BONNIER team up!
Collaboration is key here. Only in teams can the outcome include the best of both worlds. If it is just the print house that wants to do "one of those apps", things usually end up looking maybe nice and fancy, but mostly unusable.
It is not just a matter of paying the "app developer". It is about conversation and learning from each other. In terms of that I'm rather optimistic about the "future of news"..

Other recent print-innovations I found notable:

1. NZZ Kombi Abo: Print on the Weekend, ePaper during the week. http://www.abo.nzz.ch/kombiabo

2. ZEIT Online iPad optimized: There is no need to appify everything. The browser can be just good enough.

Now turn it into reality! | The Future of the Books -A study by IDEO (HT: @jkleske)

The Future of the Book. from IDEO on Vimeo.

Notice the "pinch-out" gesture to see the "bigger picture". Exciting to see how we will adapt to the mechanics behind something like that.
